Hints for future Riders

camp

So your going across America this summer?  Here are some suggestions to help you prepare physically and MENTALLY for the ride.  Also, take a look at my packing list for some additional help.

1. Have a great time Don't worry too much about the details.  You will have a great time even if your bike isn't the best, your not the fastest, or you (SHOCK) have to sag one a day or two.  So try to cover your butt, prepare, pack, train, but don't worry about it. (ps. I never sagged. :P)
2. The ride will strain relationships. Leaving a loved one behind for a long time is always hard.  What makes it harder is that you are going be having a great time.  And your loved one is going to stuck at home.  Be prepared!! (hint: don't talk about what a great time you are having everyday with the guy/girl you are hanging out with.)
3. Don't Sweat the Training Your body will adjust quickly (less than 2 weeks) to the demands of daily riding.  So you don't have to do ALOT of training.  If you are short on time, take long rides (50+ miles) on a Saturday or Sunday for a month, with a couple of short rides during the week.  This will help you get used to and adjust your bike so it Fits Properly.
4. Fund Raising can be a Pain! Get it done as early as possible.
5. Take LOTS and LOTS of pictures!!! Especially of people.  Don't bring too much film with you, you can always buy more.
6. Get a good tent It WILL rain.  Also, have a decent sleeping bag for the cold.  I also recommend a sleep sheet.
7. Post Ride Depression. Going back to 'real' life after the ride is a real pain.  My depression lasted for 4 months.  What makes it worse is that this type of experience can't be duplicated.  Even if you do the ride again, the same people won't be there.  You will miss 'The Ride' for the rest of your life.
8. You will always talk about 'The Ride' If you can't stop talking about it now, wait till you get back home, with your 12 rolls of film.  Non riders will not understand your joy and experiences. *see #7.
9. Rain gear does not keep you 'dry' When you ride a bicycle in the rain you will get wet.  The goal is not to stay dry but stay warm.  Make sure you layer up, and have something that will block the wind when wet.  I highly recommend wool socks.
