Montana and the Weather Days 11 - 12For many riders, these were the hardest days. The weather was hard on the spirit. We had heavy rain on the 11th, snow (!) on the 12th, and the morning of the 13th started off really cold. I made it all of these days. The inclement weather seemd to make me excited and invigorate me. However, the morning of the 13th, even I was starting to get annoyed with the cold. Luckily, after Pit 2, day 13 was beautiful.
Day 11, Thursday 6/25/98. Did I mention we had some bad weather? image by GTE
Day 11, Thursday 6/25/98. "Where did I park my bike?" --a common phrase around the parking lot. I could always find mine (when I parked my bike in parking) by my flag pole.
Day 12, Friday 6/26/98. This day will live in my memory forever. Climbing up Mc Donald pass on that snowy morning. Most riders had to sag this day. Notice the wool cap under the helmet. I'm wearing, two jerseys, arm warmers, red windbreaker (you can see it poking through), rain jacket, riding shorts, leg warmers, rain pants, wool socks, and plastic grocery bags on my feet. You can see the media motor home in the parking of the rest stop behind me. That was pit stop 1. Most riders stopped to rest, and ended having their body cool down too much. The route became 'officially' closed, which met there would be no more support, because they had to concentrate on getting people down off the hill. I went on. I have experience riding a motorcycle in very cold weather (even snow) and I didn't get too cold on the way down. Overall it wasn't too bad, and would gladly ride this day over again instead of a day at work!
Day 12, Friday 6/26/98. After a day in the road (esp a hard one), there was nothing sweater than the sound of bagpipes in the evening.
